Notes

! I am including excerts from David Watson's autobiography, written just days before his death in 1870. According to a narrative of Stephen Watson, David was one of six brothers - said to be the smallest, and his average weight was 235 pounds. Stephen was the eighth child of David and Mary.

! "My parents, Walter and Rachel Watson, were born in the state of Maryland, about the year 1750. My mother was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from my earliest recollection....I was born in Calvert County, Md., near the coast of the Chesapeake Bay, in the year 1783." (they lived very near lower Marlboro, at a place called Nottingham, on the Patuxent River.) In the year 1797, (at the tender age of 14), David left home to go to sea for 6 years, returning after many experiences, some good, some not so good. Upon his return he found his father had left the area, and moved to Frederick County, Va. This was in 1803. From the story we find David's father had at least 2 brothers still living near lower Marlboro, Md., but not named in the narrative. It also mentions several cousins, but none by name.

! "In the spring of 1805, my father purchased a lease of a Mr. Helphenstine, which I went to see, expecting that brother James and I would farm it. After looking around the farm, I went to the house, and there saw the girl whom I afterward married. Her mother was dead, and she, only ten years of age, was acting as housekeeper. She politely offered me a chair; we had some general conversation, during which I resolved that if I could succeed I would make her my wife when the proper time had come." (actually her birthdate from the marker in the Paint Twp. Cemetery, shows she had to be about 12 years old.)

! "About this time my attention was turned to the west, especially to Ohio. I knew there was better land there than that we were farming. One day I said to father, let us go to Ohio. You have always been a renter here, and have paid rent enough to buy a farm there. We are all working hard and accomplishing but little. At first he tried to persuade me not to think of it, but seeing how anxious I was, he consented to my going, saying if I was pleased with the country he would go, too. Mr. Helphenstine was going west, which I frankly confess increased the attraction. He had four horses and I had one, which just made a team. Accordingly we united, and without any special incident, reached Chilicothe, Ohio, in October, 1805, where we remained until January." After surveying work was done, and securing a place for his father, David returned to Virginia in September of 1806, to find all were ready to go with him to their new home in Ohio. "There were six or seven wagons, my own taking the lead. We reached Chillicothe, about the last of October. Father moved at once to the place I had rented for him, and Jonathan Minshall and family accompanied him. (Jonathan Minshall was married to his sister.) A few days after our arrival, Jonathan purchased 100 acres of land lying alongside of mine. Some time about the last of December, he and I built a log cabin for him. This was the first house built in this part of the country. We completed it about the 12th of January, 1807. We returned to Chillicothe, and after a few days,...he moved into his new house, and I came with him. No more moved into our part of the country until the following March."

! " On July 28, 1807, I started for Franklinton to secure a marriage license. My intended's father gave me an instrument of writing testifing to his willingness that the marriage should occur." David and Mary were married on the 29th of July. The marriage is recorded in Franklin County, because at that time Madison County was part of Franklin County, it not becoming Madison County until the spring of 1810. Mary was but 14 years old at the time.

! David Watson was a farmer and stock raiser through life.

! "I wish hastily to record my connection with the War of 1812. In those days all able-bodied men between the ages of eighteen and forty-five, were required to muster once a month, and to meet for general muster once a year. Expecting a call to active service, our captain had divided us into classes of eight in number. We were soon called out to build a block house at Mill Creek, near Marysville, Ohio. We spent four weeks there, and as we could see no signs of trouble from the Indians, we returned home. I made up my mind not to try to secure a substitute, nor in any way avoid going when I was needed. Soon we were called to Sandusky. On the way we met an express with the command to return. Several weeks were quietly spent at home. One day the captain came with the work that I must go again. We hurried to Sandusky, arriving there at noon the day after the battle. It was decided to discharge 4000 men, leaving 3000 still in the field. I was among those that remained, and returned with others to Franklinton. Two wagon loads of us had been taken down with the measles, and were hauled home.....thus ended my experience in the War of 1812."

! From 1818 to 1824, I was employed to distribute the laws through this Western District - a territory embracing some fifteen counties....after having completed my work, I presented my bill, and it may be mentioned, as an illustration of the financial condition of the state in that early day, that there was not money enough in the treasury to pay me." I'm really not sure just what David did during this time. I don't think this position was a sheriff, but I'm not sure. David's autobiography includes many incidents of the times, in which he lived. Anyone chasing the Watson line, may be interested to check his line out. My own husband is named David Watson, but we could find no connection to this line of Watson's. My husband's grandfather was an orphan, and was brought to Indiana on the Orphan Trains, to work in the glass houses of the time, bringing with him little knowledge of his heritage.

! Walter Watson, born about 1750 in Maryland, died 11 Jun 1822 in Madison Co., Ohio. He and his wife Rachel, born about 1750 in Maryland, are probably buried in the Paint Twp. Cemetery, Madison Co., Ohio. They had 6 sons, of which 3 were David, James, and Walter. Walter was born the 14 of July 1791, in Calvert Co., Maryland. He died 29 April 1850, in Madison Co., Ohio. He is buried in Paint Twp. Cemetery, Madison Co., Ohio. I have the names of Eleanor, who Married Jonathan Minshall, and Elizabeth who married Peter P. Helphenstine, as sisters of David. Elizabeth is found elsewhere in this book with Peter P. Helphenstine. From the story told by David Watson in April 1870, I was able to derive the other children of Walter and Rachel. I believe there were other daughters, but I do not have their names at this time. The Paint Twp. Cemetery has 6 additional acres, donated by David Watson. It was originally called the Withrow Family Cemetery, named for the Withrows, who were also early settlers of this area. This cemetery is still in use at this time (1994). SDW

! Walter Watson came to Madison Co., Ohio in 1806, which was at that time Franklin County. Helphenstine's, Minshall's, and Watson's all came together by wagon train. The total number of their party was 39 people. They were the first to settle in that part of the country. A few land transactions for David and his father Walter, can be found under Peter P. Helphenstine. I recorded the ones that were between Peter and the Watson's. Many more can be found in the Madison County Courthouse. SDW
