Notes

! Everett Edward Rider, Jr. joined the navy July 31, 1943 during World War II. He was discharged Mar. 1, 1946, doing his tour of duty in the Pacific Islands.

! Everett Edward Rider, Jr. was a body man, working on automobiles, as was his father before him. He is now retired and lives in Chicago, Il. He was well-known in Marion as the best auto body repairman in Marion.

! Everett E. Rider, nickname Buster, was divorced from his first wife, Jean Sprowl 17 Jan. 1949. By this marriage one child was born, his name was Robert Eugene Rider. He was adopted out to a cousin of Buster's, Juanita, daughter of Irene.

! Buster's father was nicknamed Buss.

! Eulogy written by Deloris Rider after the passing of Everett E. Rider. EVERETT RIDER ! Ah! There are souls none understand; Like clouds, they cannot touch the land. Unanchored ships, they blow and blow, Sail to and fro; then go down In unknown seas that none shall know. Without one ripple of renown.

! Call these not fools; the test of worth Is not the hold you have on earth, Ay, the gentlest souls sea-blown That know not any harbor known. Now it may be the reason is, They touch on fairer shores than this.

! We are gathered here today in loving memnory of Everett Rider... husband, father, grandpa, friend. And those of us who knew him well that did not call him "Dad", we all knew him as Buster, sometimes Buss.

! Buss was many things to many people. He was bright and funny, witty, and a born story teller. He was also one of the best body men around.

! He was married three times...had three children...four step-children ...seven grandchildren...five step-grandchildren...and by the time we got to great-grandchildren, we just mixed them all together, dropping the step part, and he claimed six of those. (Actually there are nine grandchildren, not seven.)

! He loved his children, and he was proud of them. He felt great affection for his grandchildren, and great-grands. He still loved his ex wife, and I could understand this. For Dorothy was a special lady.

! He was the son of Everett and Edna Tucker Rider, and doted on his parents. The loss of his mother and father was a crushing blow to him.

! If ever a man marched to a different drummer, it was Buster. He had a problem with the enthusiastic comsumption of alcoholic beverages that took place over what would be a lifetime for most people, although the truth is, it was less of a problem for Buster than it was for those who loved him.

! Those of us who cared were horrified by the copious amount of liquor he easily consumed, and we nagged him...railed at him...threatened ...and tried to coerce him, with little or no success.

! At one point, Buster may have set a new record by returning home from an AA meeting intoxicated.

! When the doctors warned him about his drinking, he announced that there were more old drunks around than old doctors.

! Eventually, his drinking caught up with him, destroying his health. After two months in the hospital, with 24 hour nursing care necessary, he had to go into a nursing home.

! You cannot choose your battlefield; The gods do that for you But you can plant a standard Where a standard never flew.

! Throughout his three year illness, during untold suffering, Buster displayed tremendous courage. He faced his trials on a daily basis, sometimes raging against the fates, but with uncommon resolution and spirit.

! The greatest test of courage on this earth is to bear defeat without losing heart. And Buster did that. Only toward the end did he tell me "I am tired."

! Years ago, I came home from work many times, to find Buster making lists of friends of his that had passed away. So many of these people had gone on to an early grave, and he missed them.

! I console myself now, thinking that Buster is in heaven, well again, with his parents, and those friends from long ago, laughing and telling jokes and stories. Of course if it really is heaven, then I know that there is a model A Ford parked at the curb. Buster really liked model A Fords.

! Buster, you will never be forgotten, and we are going to miss you so much.

! Speak no more of his renown. Lay your earthly fancies down. And in the vast cathedral leave him. God accept him, Christ receive him.

! Yes, this was my father, quite a character, but I loved him with all my heart. I know he loved his children, too. I remember as a little girl he would take me around with him, parading me before his friends. He was proud of his little girl. I will always treasure those years. Even though he was an alcoholic and didn't do things by the conventional method, he was still my father. Deloris said he marched to a different drummer, she certainly was right about that. But we all could sit for hours listening to his storytelling. I have yet to find anyone that could tell such horrible stories and still be able to keep his audience spellbound and listening to every word, because he could make them sound so funny. This is the father I choose to remember.
