! (Information I received from Joan Robinson) This is a portion of a letter written by "Aunt Belle to a Mrs. Wheeler" (probably her sister Frances Virginia.) .....The most ridiculous occurrence yet happened here two weeks ago. We have had hawks and owls and coyotes after our chickens and turkeys so whenever we hear any unusual noise we all run, so that morning I was having coffee and the others asleep, when the blackbirds, turkeys and chickens set up an awful clatter and I ran out to the yards and found a big yellow bob cat struggling with a hen. He had one wing and was so busy getting the other that he did not see me. He was just over the wire fence and between two small coops about a foot high. I started to call the folks and thought that by the time they wakened and dressed and found a gun the cat would be gone and from somewhere came the idea that with a long heavy stick I could slip along the wall of one coop and hit him on the head and I did just that and the first blow knocked him out. He just let go of the hen and blinked and rolled over. One more blow and he kicked a bit and was gone. I came back to the house and reported and was properly reprimanded for taking such a risk. That day the woman came to clean house and said the skin would make a pretty rug. I told her she could have it and she took it to Beatty to a trapper to be skinned and they asked her how she killed it and she said "Mrs. Howard killed it with a picket" and "she is 83 years old" and that started something. A man we knew in Tonopah stopped here to ask about it and the next thing we knew came this fool thing in the Tonopah paper. The paper has changed hands. The editor is a desert rat. I do not know him personally but do not wonder that he was sick. Later came four copies of the paper to me. I wandered why and Mr. Kelly said "he (the editor) just thought you would want them to send to your friends." I said "No, I will not." And Mr. Kelly said "do send one to Mrs. Wheeler. She will get a kick out of it." So here it comes. Next time I kill anything I will bury it quick.

! Tonopah, Nevada, Friday, February 2, 1945 Picket-Packin' Mamma Makes Short Job of Bob Cat in her Chicken Yard A lot has been said, songs have benn sung and there's been much broadcasting over the radio about the deadly aim of pistol-packin' mammas, which is all well and good in this day and age when women are coming into their own in a big way. It bears out to some extent the old adage that the female of the species is more deadly than the male. And out here in Nevada there's been a number of pistol-packin' mammas of unerring aim, and the objects of their wrath now lie sleeping peacefully in desert graveyards, unwept, unhonored and unsung. There comes to the front now, a picket-packin' mamma, who also packs a wallop that leaves death and destruction in its wake. And she has established a mark for the pistol-packin' mammas to shoot at and equal if they can. Down in the little settlement of Springdale, about 80 mi. south of Tonopah and about 12 miles north of Beatty, lives Mrs. Isabelle H. Howard, who resides at the attractive home of R.J. Kelly, mining man and rancher. The other morning about 7:30 o'clock, Mrs. Howard was attracted by a commotion in the chicken-yard. As she has raised a prize flock of Buff Orpingtons, which she thinks a lot of, she got out there in a hurry to investigate. One can well imagine her consternation when she found a huge bob-cat hungrily devouring one of her prize hens. She was unarmed, but that did not deter her for an instant. Grasping a four-foot picket from the ground, she swung a mighty wallop at the cat's head. The picket hit the mark and the animal took the count. To make certain that it was out for keeps she administered a second wallop and lay her picket down. Mrs. Howard, who is 83, but appears much younger, dragged her victim out of the chicken yard, and when measured by Kelly, it was found to have stood at least two feet high, was over three feet from tip to tip and weighed about 45 pounds. While Mrs. Howard mourns the loss of her prize hen, she probably will be well compensated from the sale of the pelt, as the bob-cat was considered one of the finest specimens ever seen in southern Nevada.
