! John and Eliazbeth (Kaiser) had at least 2 sons, a Lewis Harrison who married Margaret Brown Paden 1 Sep 1839 in Madison Co., Kentucky and a John Philip Jacob. There were also at least 3 daughters, all of whom left for California during the gold rush of 1849.

! By another source I show that John and Elizabeth had 8 children.

! John remarried after the death of Elizabeth to Mary Singleton, a widow. They had no children.

! John and Elizabeth's marriage shows him using the Helveson spelling.

! Elizabeth Keyser/Kaiser/Kiser. I have seen all three spellings.

! In 1810 John P. was listed on the census in Fleming Co., Ky. In his household also was 4 boys and 3 girls. According to this census there should have been 4 older sons, than what I have found. Perhaps he buried more than his wife between his residence in Fleming Co., and when he resided in Daviess Co., Indiana. In 1820 he was still listed as a resident of Fleming Co., Ky.

! John (nickmamed Big John, because of another John Helphinstine about the same age as this John) got his 10 year old niece pregnant. She was the daughter of one of Big John's sisters nicknamed "Pet". Big John was around 50 at the time and shot himself dead because of the disgrace and family abuse. Henry his father, then killed himself a few months later, not so much for the shame, but more for the great personal loss he felt over the death of his favorite son. (Recollections of Ellora (Helphinstine) Hinton.)

! 1880 census lists this family in Hillsboro, Fleming Co., Ky.

Notes

! John Philip Jacob was born at sea while his parents were arriving on the ship Recovery in 1754 from Rhineland Germany.

! John Philip Jacob was a shoemaker, like his father.

! John Philip Jacob went by his second given name while in Kentucky, part of Rebecca's pension application includes a notarized statement from a man who knew both of them in Virginia, Joseph Secrest, in it he states that John Philip Jacob went by the name of Philip for many years, having dropped John and Jacob because of length.

! Philip was a Lieutenant in the 8th Va. Reg., during the Rev. War served under his father Major Peter Helphenstine.

! At the time of John Philip Jacob's death he owned 194 acres of land. This is recorded in Deed Book S Pgs. 200-201. When he died Philip Henry received 105 acres and William 93 acres. Probate records in Fleming Co. Ky. show a lawsuit forcing William to sell the land and give Philip Henry his rightful share according to the will.

! These 2 deeds are a part of the same land in Madison Co., Ohio surveyed for the heirs and devisees of Peter Helphenstine deceased. Patented by the United States of America to Peter Helphenstine in trust for the heirs and devisees of Peter Helphenstine dec'd. They must be a result of the lawsuits filed in Fleming Co., Kentucky by John Philip Jacob Helphenstine against Peter Jr. for his right to a part of their fathers bounty land. INDENTURE 22 August 1812 Recorded 19 December 1812 Philip Helphestine of Flemming Co., Kentucky to David Grove of Madison Co., Ohio for $200.00 (land on Walnut run a branch of Deer Creek) 100 acres heirs of Peter Helphestine dec'd. No Survey No. recorded. Signed by John Philip Jacob Helphenstine in the presence of Elizabeth Helphenstine (where was Peter Jr.???) INDENTURE 20 August 1812 Recorded 24 December 1812 Philip Helphenstine of Fleming Co., Kentucky to Walter Watson of Madison Co., Ohio for $200.00 (land on Walnut run a branch of Deer Creek) 100 acres heirs of Peter Helphestine dec'd. No Survey No. recorded. Signed by John Philip Peter Helphenstine in the presence of David and Sam'l Watson (sons of Walter Watson) NOTE: this last one was recorded as Philip just like the previous one but signed by John Philip Peter Helphenstine. This has always confused me. Could it just be a mistake by the recorder when it was written in the book or was this John Philip Jacob's son - John??? The Justice of the Peace - Jonathan Minshall recorded him as Philip of Fleming Co., Ky. Just another question that has never been answered. Since they were actually recorded 4 months later it probably was a mistake on the part of the recorder.

! Philip Helphinstine enlisted in Winchester, Va., in October 1775 and served in Captain Morgan Alexander's Co., Colonel Woodford's Second Virginia Regiment until 1776, when he joined Capt. Jonathan Clark's Co., Colonel Muhlenberg's Eighth Virginia Regiment of which his father, Peter Helphenstine, was Major. (not mentioned in this narrative is the fact that Philip's father paid another man to take his place so he could join the same regiment with his father) He was discharged in Nov. 1777. Between 1779 and 1781 he served several tours in the militia and after surrender of Cornwallis he was appointed Conductor to the French Army and served as such until Sept. 28, 1782. He was engaged in the Battle of Great Bridge, Ft. Moultrie (Battle of Sullivan's Island) Dec. 9, 1775, and at the siege of Charlston. See books in the Congressional Library, Wash. D.C.; Pension office claim #8930.

! 1806 was the last year John Philip Jacob was recorded on the Greenbriar, Va. Tax Records. In 1810 he was listed as a resident of Fleming Co., Ky. Listed as Phillip - 10201-03001-00. This is 3 boys and 3 girls still listed as being at home, the adult female would have been Rebecca (Wolf) wife of John Philip Jacob. He was listed in Fleming County in 1820 as well. He died in 1830.

! When William Layton made application for a Revolutionary War pension in Fleming Co. Ky in 1832, William Helphinstine son of John Philip Jacob stated that he had heard Layton and his father, Philip Helphinstine (who was a pensioner) talk over experiences in the war. (ref. MS 60)
