Notes

! Henry Helphenstine was a veteran of the War of 1812. His pension file, dated 5 Oct. 1850, states he was a resident of Madison County, Ohio. This record is located in the National Archives, Washington, D.C.

! When Henry and Nancy were married in Frederick Co., Va. it listed William Holdenby as Nancy's father and Philip Shearer as surety.

! Henry was a First Sgt. and veteran of the Indian Wars conducted by General Anthony Wayne. 1791 - 1793.

! Henry and Nancy first settled in W. Va., then left there to go to Lawrence Co., Ohio. In 1835 they moved near London in Madison Co., Oh. this being close to his brother Peter Helphenstine. In 1820 I found Henry listed in Lawrence Co., Ohio, Windsor Twp. But in 1840 he is listed in Madison Co., Ohio, in Deer Creek Twp.

! In 1850 I found Henry on the census in Madison Co., Ohio with another wife. Nancy must have passed on and he remarried Ann J. Born. They had living with them Henry H. Stout aged 12 born in Oh. apparently he was a grandchild. Henry was still on the Madison Co. Tax List in 1851. But doesn't appear on the census in 1860.

Notes

! Henry seems to be the one to change the spelling of the name again. He went by Helvesson or Helveson or Helverson. It is possible that Henry died in Dubois Co., Indiana in 1889.

! In 1850 Henry is still in Lawrence Co., Ohio Windsor Twp.

! According to notes their was supposed to be a child by the name of Daniel E. Helversson. I wonder if this was the David I found on the census, or was there another child that may have died young, or possibly wasn't born till after the 1860 census. I figured that was the case with Wiliam H. and Robert Clem so I added them, but not sure about Daniel E. Many times the names Daniel and David are mistaken for the other.

! Most information on this family line came from Carol Anne Childress of Sugarland, Tx. I (SDW) followed up on the information to confirm it.

! Henry Helphinstine had been a counterfeiter, was convicted, and imprisoned. When he was caught, "He had tried to eat the evidence." The 1860 census, records him as counterfeiter/convict.

! Henry Helphinstine was recorded as a shoemaker by occupation on the 1870 census.

! Ellora (Helphinstine) Hinton, age 94, Flemingsburg, Kentucky recalls vividly (to her daughter, Eulene Hensley), the William P., brother to Harry and father of her dad's favorite cousin, David Doyle Helphinstine. They all called him Dave and he and her father (John Elbridge) were just like brothers. When John E. Helphinstine and Amelia Vice married, they moved to the Golde farm because it was very close, maybe joined, the other Helphinstines living on Sandlick Creek, near Franklin Mills (now Mt. Vernon) just to be near Dave and Alice his first wife.

! Eulene (Hinton) Hensley wrote that the Fleming County court records give Henry's birthdate as 20 Feb 1824; his wife's as 18 Jan 1829, d. 27 Nov 1887. Henry's eldest son, Big John got his 10 year old niece pregnant. She was the daughter of one of Big John's sisters nicknamed "Pet". Big John was around 50 at the time and shot himself dead because of the disgrace and family abuse. Henry his father, then killed himself a few months later, not so much for the shame, but more for the great personal loss he felt over the death of his favorite son. John was called "Big John" because of another John Helphenstine about the same age as this John.
