Some organizations are international in scope. Most of
them have interesting sites with information and and
more links, so their pages are worth looking over,
regardless of whether you're interested in joining.

- National organization for newspaper
copyeditors.

- Graphic artists organization, group health insurance,
conference, competitions, publications on business
information (contracts, invoicing, rates, etc.).

- National organization for indexers, corporate
and freelance. Local chapters available. ASI

ASI Science and Medicine SIG
- Active special interest group for ASI members who specialize

American Society of Journalists and Authors
- Organization very devoted to copyright and
legal issues. Newsletter, job referral, workshops.

- Trade organization, offering bulletins and business

Bay Area Editor's Forum (San Francisco)
- Site with useful information for editors; the
organization also sells a rate survey.

Black Women in Publishing (BWIP)
- Mailing list, events (which appear to be
mostly in New York City), and networking. This
organization's site has a heavy writing emphasis.

Creators' Copyright Coalition
- U.K. organization devoted to freelance author's rights:
"co-ordinate the work of organisations representing creators
of copyright material of all kinds in defending their
members' interests."

- Artists union, legal and business information,
scholarships, publications, pricing guidelines,

- Action group for freelance publishing industry
photographers dedicated to fair contract negotiations.

- A terrific, bi-lingual site (English/French),
with a lot of resources and information for
freelancers.

European Federation of Freelance Writers
- As far as I can tell from the site, the purpose of
this organization is to provide a press card, group
rate liability insurance, and U.K. dialup accounts.
Any who claims to be a writer can sign up.

The International Women's Writing Guild
- Nonprofit, inexpensive "empowerment" organization
with group health insurance (Aetna), mentoring, "zip
code parties," bimonthly newsletter, literary agents
and small presses list.

Editorial Freelancer's Association (EFA) New York
- EFA offers group medical insurance and a job line.
Other services are mostly of benefit to those living
in the New York area.

Freelance Editorial Association (FEA) Boston
- FEA is a national organization, but the majority
of members are on the East Coast. FEA sends a yearly
member "yellow pages" to publishers. No group health
insurance.

Institute of Translating and Interpreting (U.K.)
- Guidance to those who wish to enter the profession,
as well as advice to those who provide translations,
and to potential employers and customers.
