Bookmarks: Job Links
Read My Clips is an answer to a favorite question.
This is the Detroit Free Press Jobs Page's "Winning Clips Win
Interviews." It has advice for writers, editors, photographers,
and designers on compiling clips for newspaper jobs, but it
also applies to freelancers on the prowl, of course. "New
Media" here denotes the Internet. The
résumé section is interesting, too.
Quintessiential Careers offers a
cover letter tutorial and a lot of
résumé
writing links at the site. You can find this sort of advice
at the other career-oriented sites as well.
National Writers Union: National Survey Freelance and
Contract Writer's Rates Summer 1999. Check it
out, yet another rates survey for writers, editors,
and proofreaders.
Most of these sites are free, but some aren't. Some may
require registration or membership. Be certain to read the
terms on the site. With the classified ads, look for posting
dates--some of these sites will still be running ads long
after the jobs have been taken and finished.

- (Was Council of Biology Editors.) Job ads and job-seeker
ads (both members and non-members, rates on Web site). See
also EyeNet's
English Editing Assistance for Ophthalmology
-
Craigslist: Bay Area Online Community
- If you live in California, go to this site. When I checked
it out there were bunches of recent editorial and writing job
classifieds in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and elsewhere. Some
are 'Net startups. (For everyone else, check out the "et cetera"
category and marvel at the weirdness that is California.)
-
Creative Freelancers
- Free listings for freelance artists, writers, and
so on. There's also a classified ad section, but none
of the entries in it are dated, so no telling how old
they are. A pretty clunky site.
-
DesktopPublishing.com Job Bank
- Short page of ads for graphics and DTP people only, U.S.
and international, in-house and not. (Worst background ever,
but if you turn off the background, the text is readable.)
-
Dice.com: High Tech Jobs Online
- Search engine for job classifieds. Enter a search
term such as "writer" or "editor."
-
Editor and Publisher
- This is primarily devoted to the newspaper industry. Note:
most positions listed, regardless of type, get clumped together
here under the heading "Editorial."
-
The Editor's Pen
- Another place you can list your business: writers,
indexers, editors. Also, the site owner's "getting
started" FAQ. There are job search links here as well.
-
eLance.com
- List your services (Fixed Price) or bid on jobs (RFP, request
for proposals). It's listed as free "during beta" (04/00).
-
FlipDog
- Job search site where you can also list your resume. You
can search by state (U.S. only), employer, or type of position.
The listings link directly to the originating site. Joy's review:
"I'll tell you about an easy marketing tool I tripped over
recently. www.flipdog.com is a job site that harvests employer Websites for
listings. It claims to have more jobs than any other site, and the worst of
its junk is only employment agencies, whose job listings are all clearly
marked as such. At this Website, you can set up 'create a jobhunter' in any
employment field (I picked "publishing/technical writing") and specify the
keyword 'freelance.' For the past week, the Jobhunter has been sending me
an e-mail every day with a dozen or so job listings. Some are onsite; some
others are for positions with job duties of recruiting or managing
freelancers, which are still leads; some are very interesting.
You can reply to a listing via e-mail directly from the Website with
your resume and cover letter."(08/20/00)
-
FreeAgent
- An unfortunate site, not at all oriented to publishing services (in
fact, I don't know who would have picked the categories they use here).
You can check under Creative, New Media, or wade through the morass that
is Other. Or just go to better sites... Anyway, this site lets you create
an online "portfolio" for yourself.
-
Freelance Editorial Association (FEA) Jobs/Bulletin Board
- Editorial and writing jobs, mostly traditional publishing with
some web related.
-
Freelance List
- For about $10/month, you can list your business. At present,
most of the site isn't operational. I can't recommend this one,
as there are plentiful free sites (that work) that offer the same
services. (8/20/00)
-
Freelance Online
- Information, links, and a pretty active posting board for
freelancers. You have to be a subscriber to access the job
classifieds. You can also post your own information online.
(Joining is $15/year, see the site. 02/25/00.)
-
FreelanceWriting.com Job Bank
- Lots of freelance writing jobs--unsurprisingly, many are
web related, many are international. Other sections of the
site include an area for listing your own ad, and there's also
a link to the eLance site (bidding and such).
-
GovCon's BidRadar Service
- Site that lists available government contract opportunities for
independent contractors (including writing and such). Email
update list and information and resources links on the site.
Also see the site's "Contracting 101" section. Plus:
Proposal Writing and
Government Contracting. This is a private site, owned by a
Deborah Kluge, that provides a ton of information on proposals
and grant writing.
-
Guru
- Another independent contractor site. You sign up as a "guru" and
post your profile and information. You can also shop for "gigs" that
are posted here. Most, but not all, of the listing I read here were
website oriented. (Per TOS, currently the service is free, but they
reserve the right and so on.)
-
Home Jobs Plus
- Telecommuting jobs of all kinds, mainly telemarketing
but once in a while some editorial types.

You can also post résumés here.
-

- Default is US edition, with links to Canadian,
International, and Small Press sites. You have to
register to view most parts of this site; the publisher
info available is limited unless you buy a subscription.
Freelancers can place listings in the Trade Services:

web related, some are temp, some may be freelance.
-
Media Personnel
- Writer, artist, graphics, editor, photographer, and other
related listings for freelancers in working with magazines,
newspapers, and web sites. This is a listings site, and most
of those listed here that I saw are Australia and U.K.
freelancers.
-

deals, but some aren't. Includes a fair number if "new media"
(Internet oriented) positions.
-
M-Grapevine
- InPharm's directory of freelancers who provide services
in the broad areas of medical communications (writers,
editors, translators, designers, and so on). Free listings
for freelancers with links to freelancer web pages.
-
The Monster Board
- Massive site, with job search engine with resume
database. You'll just have to root around. Monster also
has a rather peculiar section devoted to auctioning off
independent contractor services that it calls the
FreeAgents
Talent Market. I'm not really clear on the point
of this, so you'll just have to look it over.
-
NASW-freelance and NASW-jobs
- National Association of Science Writers mailing
lists.
-
National Writers Union Job Hotline
- Descriptions of in-house and contract positions are
online; you have to be a NWU member and pay a fee to the
organization to get contact information for these jobs.
-

websites. Some ads are freelance.
-
Publisher's Weekly Classifieds

site is useful for all sorts of publishing industry
information.
-
Seek.com
- Search engine for positions in Australia. Contract
jobs is one of the categories, includes graphics, DTP,
and 'Net type work. You can also put your résumé
online here.
-
SourceForge Help Wanted System
- For the technically inclined (especially the UNIX/Linux oriented)
here are occasional content and manual writing/editing/translating
stints as part of project groups. These are, of course, mainly
computer and programming oriented. Some of the open source
jobs won't pay beans (so do it for experience only, power to the
people, you know the drill), but some apparently do involve the
green stuff.
-
STC Job and Salary Information
- Society for Technical Communications job database of
permanent and contract positions for writers, editors,
translators, designers, and others for the U.S., Canada,
and international. You don't have to be a member to
view the listings. There's also a salary survey on
this site.

(freelance and otherwise) for the computer book industry.
Check out the rest of the site, as it has loads of material
on writing computer books.
-
Sunoasis Jobs for Writers, Editors, Copywriters
- Opening and closing dates posted. The ads are categorized
by region and seem to be up-to-date. This site is primarily
for writing jobs, with some editorial (primarily websites).
There's a freelance section, and a links section to ads on
other sites.
-
Telecommuting Jobs
- Post an ad or look over help-wanteds for freelance
writers (some editorial), also website developers and
other miscellaneous telecommuter positions.
-
Themestream
- Not technically a job site, but involves a little money. This
is that much-discussed site where you put up your old articles,
and get paid a small fee when people read them. Marg says,
"I've had three articles up there for a week and have found that
how much money you make depends on what you post. A travel article
has received exactly zero hits, while an article on how to write
a synopsis has received 81. I think it's great for pieces you've
already made your money on and you would have left in a drawer
somewhere otherwise, since you make little money up-front but
could potentially make a small chunk of money over time."
-
The Write Jobs
- Writers Write commericial site's journalism jobs section,
primarily writing jobs.
-
Work for Writers Mailing List
- Francine Modderno's list "for professional writers,
staff or freelance, to find job leads, share information
on job searches, writing contacts, contracts, writers'
organizations, etc. It's also for employers to post
jobs for print, screen and tv writers, journalists,
editors, book indexers, etc."
- Writerfind Freelance and Telecommuting Jobs:

New Zealand and
International
- Classifieds for New Zealand freelance writers and editors.
The international page covers Europe, Asia, and Australia.
-
Writing Employment Center
- Ads for editors and writers (copy and tech) in the
book and Internet industries. Very up-to-date listings
when I checked it, but the majority do appear to be
in-house jobs.
- Xlibris.com
- This is a vanity e-press (meaning, author pays the
publisher to put a book together). It doesn't hire any
freelance help, but rather has a listing area for
author services (i.e., authors can shop for their own
editors, proofreaders, designers, whatever).
