Links: Materials for Self-Education
There are a few certification programs that I
know of. Also, you can attend courses in publishing,
or you can go it alone. For the latter group, there
are a few resources for correspondence learning and
self-teaching available.
Certification Programs
-
BELS (Board of Editors in the Life Sciences)
- This is a certification program for science editors.
It costs $25 to register, and you must take a 3-hour
on-site exam (total cost $125, plus travel expenses
to the test). Please see the web site for more
details and the test schedule.
-
Brainbench
- This is a site that offers online testing for skills. You
take the test and you get a certificate stating your skill
level and and some nice gifs to display on your website.
Anyone interested can view your "public transcript" online.
Those concerned about showing some form of certification or
skill level (or maybe getting out of publisher testing) may
be interested giving this a shot. The first test is free
within 30 after registering. I can't seem to locate the
price of additional tests anywhere on the site, which is
quite irritating. I assume they're probably in the $25 range.
These are the current tests of possible interest:
Business Writing Specialist, Communication Specialist,
Corel Ventura 8 User, CorelDRAW 9 User, Editing and
Proofing - Chicago Specialist, HTML Programmer (and more
categories for related scripts and software), Keyboard
Typist (tracks WPM raw and adjusted), Medical Terminology,
MS Excel Power User, MS Word 2000 Power User, MS PowerPoint
Power User, WordPerfect 9 User, Written English
Professional.
