Powhatan Jackson & Mary Beaty - 8 July, 2011

Powhatan Jackson was my gr gr grandfather and went by Porter mainly after 1849 or so. He was born in Virginia in 1814 but I'm not sure what county yet. In 1819 his father moved the family to Washington Co VA and this is where Powhatan stayed until his move to Kentucky which didn't come until 1853. The 1820 Washington Co VA census does does have a John Jackson (Free Person of Color) but no female old enough to be his wife. John's wife has apparently died just before the move in 1819 which meant that Porter grew up without a mother.

Porter met his wife, Mary Beaty in Washington Co VA and married her there in 1835. She was the daughter of John Beaty. Their first 8 children were born there and then in 1853 the family decided to move to Kentucky. Porter's 2 older brothers were already living there. He did not move to Korgan Co KY as his brother's had but opted for the more mountainous region of Breathitt Co Kentucky. Here his last 4 children were born.

Sometime during the 1860s the family again uprooted and this time moved just a few miles south to Perry Co KY. They settled in an area known as Meadow Branch near the town of Chavies. My father's birth certificate says Krypton. Porter and Mary stayed on Meadow Branch the rest of their lives and both look to died around 1884 and are buried in the Jackson Cemetery on Meadow Branch.
