I was acquainted with Robert S. Beaty the soldier and father of Eveline Sturgeon the claimant about one year before he went into the army in 1864. He was at that time a healthy vigorous man. I was well acquainted with him from the time he came out of the army in the fall of 1865. He was sick with lung trouble and constipation of the bowels. I lived near to him and saw him often. He continued to suffer with the aforesaid lung and bowel trouble until the time of his death about the 2nd day of May 1866. He claimed that he contracted the aforesaid diseases in the U.S. Army in the line of his duty. I was present at the time of his death and saw him die and believe that he died from the aforesaid diseases. This statement was written by Wells Remy at my verbal dictation and was not dictated by any other person. I further declare that I have no interest in said case, and am not concerned in it’s prosecution.

In the matter of Pension Claim of Evelyne Sturgeon

On this 16th day of September A.D. 1897, personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid county, duly authorized to administer oaths Martha J. Bailey age 57 years, whose Post Office address is Howell, Lawrence County, Ohio, who being duly sworn, declares in relation to said case as follows:

I first became acquainted with Robert Beaty the Father of Evelyne Sturgeon when he was a widower after the death of his first wife. Before he was married the second time he had Evelyne Sturgeon then a little girl with him and acknowledged her as his child. Mr. Beaty’s first wife’s name before she was married was Millie Bowman. When I first saw Robert Beaty after his second marriage was after his discharge from the army. Evelyne Sturgeon was living at home with her father at that time and was always acknowledged by him to be his child. I don’t know of any person living in this state that could testify as to his marriage to Evelyne Sturgeon’s mother. If there is any record of his first marriage I don’t know where it is but I don’t think there is any doubt of their marriage. I further declare that I have no interest in said case, and am not concerned in it’s prosecution.
