What is v.92 and v.44?

  V.92 is the new modem standard defined by the ITU. Comteck does NOT charge any additional fees for this service. There are 3 major features included in the new protocol:
    * Quick Connect
    * Modem-On-Hold
    * PCM Upstream rate to 48k
Quick Connect, for those that can hear the modem negotiation while dialing in, allows the modem to "train" or negotiate the link faster than before, normally in about half the time. v.92 has a different and distinct sound compared to v.90 or v.34. It works by remembering what the connection was like the last time, and attempts to re-connect at the same. We have found connect rates run about mid-40s for the modems we've tested, with very few retrains. If you have not been able to get v.90 (connection rates over 33,600), you will not be able to get v.92.
Modem-On-Hold allows you to suspend your Internet connection to answer a call. Finished with the call, hang up and your connection resumes without having to dial back in. You need to have Call-Waiting and Caller-ID from your local phone company to use this feature. This is a great replacement for programs like Call-Wave. The maximum time you can leave your Internet connection on hold is 4 minutes.
PCM Upstream allow up to 48k upstream rate (currently not supported).
V.44 is a new data compression standard that improves data transfer speeds significantly. Things like web pages and E-Mail, that are highly compressable, can see transfer speeds increase, simulating connections at 150-200BPS. We have actually seen v.44 compression goes as high as 8 to 1. Almost all data can be compressed, including mp3s, to some degree. Our tests show mp3 transfer compression average at 1.75:1.

Since upgrading, we have found the average connect speeds for all users have increased, with 55-60% getting 45k or better. Some, normally with old drivers or firmware, may have difficulty getting or staying connected. We strongly urge you to visit your modem manuafacturer's web site and upgrade to the lastest drivers/firmware.

V.92 Modems
We have tested the LT WinModem, Zoom PCI, Best Data, Pine, Intel HaM, Modem Blaster and 2 3COM Externals. The LT WinModem and the Zoom use the same chipset. The LT WinModem was upgraded from v.90 and worked great. The Zoom was purchased new from Staples with the v.92 modem and works good, although the MOH applet occationally failed to acknowledge an incoming call and we were disconnected by Call Waiting. The Intel works great for v.44 but the lack of an available applet for Modem-on-Hold doesn't let you take advantage of that feature. It is to be released in the near future. The Best Data and Pine use the Conexant chipset, and the NetWaiting applet. Both modems were the low end model and connected v.92/v.44 at 45k+ rates. The NetWaiting applet worked as advertised, but we were disconnected randomly for no apparent reason. The Modem Blaster connected well v.92 and v.44. We have not tested the MOH yet. The 3Com was upgraded using 3Com's Control Center program and has, so far, failed to connect v.92 or v.44. We have an open support ticket with 3COM regarding this (Case ID:2498024). Unfortunately, after upgrading the 3COM, it connects less than what it did before with no way of flashing it back. We purchased a new 3COM v.92 modem and it, too, failed to connect v.92 or v.44. Calls to their tech support provided no help in identifying the problem and they claimed it was the first they ever heard of this problem (even though we have an open support ticket on the same problem from the modem we upgraded). We talked to the supervisor, and they were supposed to call back. After 2 more calls to their support (NOT toll-free), we have yet to get a return call.
We strongly suggest that you check with your PC or modem manufacturer to obtain the latest flash and drivers. Even if you can't use the v.92, you may be able to log in with v.44 which really helps.
